I’ve been working as a teacher in fashion business for a while now. About six years. During that time I’ve seen all types of students go on and do all types of different things. Its amazingly satisfying seeing someone get their first job after leaving university. Im proud of all of my students who Get Shit Done and who go on to become kick ass Girl Bosses.
The most common question as a teacher I get is “How do I get my first job in fashion” Pretty much everyone of my students ask me this and yet very few of them actually go and do what I tell them to do.
So, here it is.. The secret to getting your first job in Fashion is
SHOWING UP. DOING SOMETHING.
At this point I lose 80% of those who have just asked me the million dollar question just moments ago. Why? Well, it sounds like hard work, that’s why. Thomas Edison famously said
“Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work” and guess what, it’s true.
What does “showing up” mean the other 20% ask and I reply, it means starting something that shows us who you are, what you can do… even if you aren’t being paid to do it.
That’s when the next 10% drop off… Wait, what… you want me to do something and NOT get paid for it.
Which leaves us with the last few students. The ones who aren’t afraid of hard work, who are willing to show up and who are simply DYING to show the world what they are made of. These are the ones who don’t need a CV, who are head hunted and who often turn down jobs because they have already established themselves in the modern fashion industry as influencers, movers and shakers or tastemakers.
So if you are a student who is looking for a job in fashion and you don’t want to sit around and wait for an opportunity to fall in your lap then pull out your laptop and start creating content.
Create an instagram feed, create a blog, start selling products you have designed or curated from your blog. Kick ass. Repeat.
